I was recently commissioned to do a set of 3 paintings. This was my first big commission and I have to admit I was a little terrified at first but in the end I was so happy with them I almost didn’t want to send them off. They were also an excellent learning experience because, while I had done paintings in a series, I had not done a triptych before and it can be a challenge to keep them looking cohesive.
The set is titled Haystack Rock – inspired by the rocks at Cannon Beach, Oregon. They are mixed media – paper and acrylic paint on gallery wrapped canvas. While they are meant to all be hung together I made each piece so it could stand on it’s own. The canvases are 18″ x 24″ and one of my biggest challenges was setting them up so I could work on all 3 at once. I need a bigger table surface if I want to tackle such a large project again. Working on the floor is hard on the knees and back.
Here is a shot of the paintings in their new home. I absolutely love how they look against the wall color.
I love triptych art. This came out really great, and I enjoyed hearing the story behind it. 🙂
